A family once thanked me for being an “anchor” in the life of their loved one, who had been living in the “storm” of a chronic alcohol addiction.  Years later I hold that metaphor of the anchor at the core of my work.  I specialize in helping people during their most challenging times- during their storms.

When we are suffering, we can feel overwhelmed, confused, alone and defeated- we feel unhappy and stuck and just want to feel better.  We do not need to suffer.  My goal is to partner with clients to replace unhappy, stuck and suffering, with meaning and purpose, vitality and hope.

I use a collaborative, strength-based partnership with my clients.  I draw on skills from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy.  Though our past experiences, patterns of thought, behaviors and connection impact how we live life; I believe our healing is done in the present, in the here and now.

I received my Masters degree in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and am licensed in the state of Wisconsin as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC).   I have experience working within academic settings, community mental health and restorative justice programs,  Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and nonprofit leadership.  I value working with clients from all backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities. I look forward to meeting you!

Hello! My name is Rebecca McNamee.  I believe that the two most important things I can do as a therapist are to create a safe place for vulnerability to thrive and to remind my clients of truths- you are a human being with complex needs, who is inherently worthy of being heard and seen, and who is fully capable of achieving the outcomes you envision for yourself.

I utilize motivational interviewing strategies and a strengths-focused approach to help empower clients.  I draw from principles of IFS to encourage exploration of how the roles we assign to ourselves work together to bring about the perceptions and behaviors we present.

I received a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a minor in Gerontology from Western Michigan University in 2020, then went on to get my Master’s in Clinical Social Work there in 2022.  I completed a clinical internship in refugee resettlement, where I adapted to overcome the language barrier in treatment by focusing on body-based interventions to help clients manage the symptoms of chronic stress.  Most recently, I worked in hospice care, where I provided supportive counseling to patients and their families to help address anticipatory grief and to promote positive adaptation after loss.

“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.  Choosing authenticity means cultivating the courage to be imperfect.” ~Brene Brown
